With the outbreak of the COVID-19 that emerged in China last December, most of us are concerned about the transmission of the virus.
One of the major myths that the public believed in is that the virus can transmit to another through parcels and any products that are shipped from China or other countries that have cases of infected people such as Indonesia, Malaysia etc.
How does COVID-19 transmit?
COVID-19 can transmit to another person when someone who is infected cough or sneezes and the water droplets enters a healthy person via the eyes, nose or mouth. If these water droplets land on surfaces and someone touches these surfaces before touching their eyes, nose or mouth, they can get infected too.
As the virus COVID-19 can survive on surfaces, this has caused a huge concern amongst the public, especially for those who frequently purchase products from shops that source their products from overseas. The public believed that the virus can survive on the products and by touching them, COVID-19 is transmitted.
However, there is no need for concern when you buy products online that are shipped over from China or for example, our teak wood furniture that is shipped over from Indonesia.
Why?
Here are some facts about how long the virus can survive on surfaces:
-
- Air, up to 3 hours
- Cardboard boxes, up to 24 hours
- Plastic or stainless steel surface, up to 2 to 3 days
What Does It Mean For Our Furniture?
The shipping of our teak wood furniture usually takes a week. That gives ample time for the virus on the surface of the furniture, if there is any, to die while it’s being shipped in the containers.
Once arrived, our teak wood furniture is taken out of the containers and inspected by the carpenters before they are arranged to be delivered to the customers’ house. This usually takes another week before the customer gets their furniture delivered to their home.
Given the time that is required for products to be shipped from overseas and finally delivered to the customers in Singapore, it is unlikely that the virus can survive on the surface for such a prolonged period of time. This makes the spread of COVID-19 by handling products that are shipped from overseas highly unlikely.
If I’m Still Concerned, What Can I Do?
Whether the product you received is shipped from overseas or locally – or even purchase you made at the grocery store, always wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water whenever you return home.
It is a good practise for personal hygiene to keep once you’re back home whether you bring in a delivery item into your house or not.
As the virus cannot transmit through the skin, if you have touched any surfaces do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.
